About

National Kappa Delta was founded at Longwood College, Virginia, in 1897 by four women and was chartered by the State of Virginia in 1902. A local group at St. Lawrence University, which became Pan Pasia, petitioned national Kappa Delta for membership in 1918. As a result, in 1921, the Sigma Eta Chapter of National Kappa Delta was installed at St. Lawrence. In the fall of 1968, three sisters deactivated from Kappa Delta on the basis of dissatisfaction with the beliefs and morals of Kappa Delta. After much personal struggle, the girls refused to live under the domination of an organization which told them what color and skin pigment a friend must be.The Chapter broke away from Kappa Delta and became and independent, local sorority on February 22, 1969, under the name of Kappa Delta Sigma. They received 25 pledges on Pledge Saturday, including Lydia Minatoya, a girl who was not approved by Kappa Delta because of her race. KDS was founded upon the principles of faith in friendship, concern for human dignity and respect for the individual, her ideas, beliefs, and feelings. Inherent in these principles is the understanding that the worth of an individual cannot be measured. Every person has something to offer and much can be gained from the interpersonal relationships of a group bound by common goals and ideals. The sisters of Kappa Delta Sigma believe that friendship requires care, honesty, respect, and an atmosphere in which such friendship can flourish. Written by Kristine Lauria ‘04 Fall 06 Bid Day
